What is Cartography of Practice?

Cartography of Practice is a visually grounded, creative process designed to help Arts Therapists reflect on and reconnect with the heart of their practice. This session invites self-reflection, exploring how your values shape your work and providing clarity and insight. In essence, it is a creative, values-driven mapping session for Arts Therapists!

Cartography of Practice uses symbolic mapping and terrain metaphors to support reflection and orientation. This can help practitioners gain clearer insight into the relationships, values and patterns within the landscape of their practice.

Inspired by the Business Model Canvas, Cartography of Practice is a flexible process that can be adapted depending on what you need. Whether you are looking for values-based reflection or a strategic business focus, this process can meet you where you are.

This is a creative and reflective process to help you reconnect with your values and authentic self; it does not constitute business coaching or supervision. Some participants may find the process leaning more into self-reflection and reconnecting with their “why”, while others may find room for strategic thinking around their practice and growth.

What participants are saying:

My experience of the Cartography of Practice process was deeply nurturing. It offered a spacious, relational environment where I felt supported to explore whatever emerged, at my own pace. You hold the process with such care and presence, creating an ease that allows for vulnerability and a genuine sense of safety. The prompts offered were beautifully considered and helped to gently guide the process, offering just enough structure to support reflection without limiting it. I would highly recommend this experience.” — Lisa

How does it work?

We begin with a large blank paper map, a collection of blank symbolic ‘terrain tiles’, and a set of themed ‘terrain cards’ that represent different aspects of your practice. This hands-on, tactile approach invites you to physically interact with the materials, selecting the ‘cards’ that you would like to explore on your journey and creating an emergent map on the page.

These themed cards are designed to guide your reflection. Some cards are designed to be foundational, while others are optional- but it is always up to you. This process is facilitated by me, so I hold the container whilst you explore!

Throughout the process you will be invited to respond to the card prompts through creative inquiry -such as drawing, writing, mark-making, sculpture or layering materials. In honouring the value of emergence, these prompts can often be just the beginning of the process. The focus here is not on the creative outcome but the process itself as the practice. As insight emerges, the map can be adjusted and reshaped.
