Eco-Mythic Arts

Art, ecology & the wonderful conversation of simply being alive

Over the past decade, I have been increasingly drawn to exploring the deep conversation that can be had between art-making, ecology, myth and embodied experience. This is a place where creativity can become a way of relating to the world around us.

Eco-Mythic Arts is the name I am now giving to this evolving body of work (a name inspired by a workshop with Geoff Berry & Julie Lacey in 2018). For me eco-mythic arts is way of exploring how creative practice can help us remember our belonging within the wider living world, and how stories, symbols and somatic knowing can also help guide us towards a more reciprocal ways of being. There is magic in rainbows, stories to be told and I feel a hope to be renewed in how we may be able to steward ourselves and the planet in a time of deep unrest.

A rainbow can be a beautiful reminder that nature is inherently creative. This image reminds me of hope, and that even after a storm the sky speaks of wisdom and connection through colour and light. Castlemaine, Dja Dja Wurrung Country, Victoria, 2018

Broadly, my approach weaves together:

  • Ecology & place-based practice

  • Mythopoetics & storytelling

  • Somatic awareness & embodied inquiry

  • Arts-based exploration

  • Relational ontology

  • Liminality, thresholds & transformation

  • Creative process theory

  • Reciprocity with the more-than-human world

I see ths as a living inquiry, one that moves & bends and shifts & transforms. It is an ongoing inquiry shaped by walking, noticing, art-making, dreaming and the continuous and ever-evolving dialogue that I have with land, materials, memory and myth.

This lens informs my therapeutic work, but in many ways it feels more deeply rooted in my writing, my workshops, and the way I move through the world.
